WAVE OP X EFINOR, Groupe M: a collaborative industrial approach for efficient and competitive wave energy

DIKWE technology: harnessing wave energy sustainably

DIKWE technology is based on modular boxes incorporating flaps—vertical oscillating flaps—capable of converting wave energy into carbon-free electricity. These systems, which can be installed on existing or new breakwaters, address multiple challenges: local renewable energy production, enhancement of coastal infrastructure, and contribution to coastal protection.

The success of this technology depends as much on the quality of its design as on its ability to be manufactured reliably and economically.

Flaps: critical components at the heart of the system

As highly stressed mechanical components, the flaps play a central role in the performance and durability of the DIKWE device. The industrial manufacturing of these components was therefore carried out in collaboration between WAVE-OP and the EFINOR Métal teams in order to guarantee:

• high resistance to mechanical cycles induced by swells,

• Durability compatible with demanding marine conditions,

• Precision assembly ensuring optimal integration into modular enclosures.

These three flaps, designed to capture the power of the waves, measure 5.50 x 7.75 meters and weigh 14 tons each.

An industrial approach focused on overall performance and controlled costs

In a renewable energy production project, economic competitiveness is a key factor for success. The manufacture of the flaps was therefore the subject of a comprehensive review that took into account industrial constraints, planned volumes, and prospects for future deployment from the outset.

This partnership approach has made it possible to:

• optimize manufacturing processes,

• adapt technical choices to industrial realities,

• limit production times and material losses,

• lay the foundations for reproducible and industrializable manufacturing.

The shared objective is clear: to contribute to a technically efficient wave energy solution that remains economically viable throughout its entire life cycle.

A collective project promoting the energy transition

This demonstrator illustrates the importance of cooperation between technological innovation and industrial know-how. The success of DIKWE technology relies on the coordinated commitment of all stakeholders involved, each contributing their expertise to a common goal: making wave energy accessible, reliable, and competitive.
